January 27th marks 42 years since the assassination of the Turkish Consul General in Los Angeles, Mehmet Baydar, and the Vice Consul, Bahadir Demir, by the Armenian-American extremist, Gourgen Yanikian. His simultaneous public appeal to “kill Turks” resulted in numerous attacks carried out against Turkish diplomats and civilians between 1975 and 1991. On January 28, 1982, Harry (Hampig) Sassounian, assassinated another Turkish Consul General, Kemal Arikan, in Los Angeles. Additionally, January 19th also marked eight years since the assassination of the Armenian Turkish journalist, Hrant Dink, in Istanbul, a crime that was widely condemned by Turkish public and duly prosecuted by the Turkish court.

These tragic anniversaries as well as the Charlie Hebdo terror attacks in Paris earlier this month emphasize the importance of an open dialog embracing the diversity of opinions. Unfortunately, the attempts to impose the one-sided Armenian genocide narrative in public education and legislation in California and other states counter this common sense and extend the dangerous antagonism.

Join the Pax Turcica action campaign to remember the victims of all crimes committed over the Turkish-Armenian historical controversy and to urge a mutual understanding of painful history as the only path towards healing and reconciliation.
